parent manual solutions for problem children

The amazing growing egg!

This one is one of the most simple experiments that is known to man! The best of it is that although it is so simple to prepare it will no doubt amaze the kids!

What you will need

An egg

White vinegar (normally for pickling, found in any supermarket)

Bowl

Method

Place egg in bowl or other suitable container

Pour vinegar into the bowl or container until the egg is covered

Leave and keep watching! Result!

Within a couple of hours you will begin to see a difference! The egg shell will begin to disintegrate! Keep watching! Over the next few days the shell will disappear completely if by magic! To add to the effect the water that is naturally contained within the vinegar absorbs through the albumen (the white of the egg) causing the egg to swell to almost double its size! Kids find this fascinating!

Here's the science bit!

The effect that is seen on the egg shell is similar to that seen in acid erosion. The egg shell is made of calcium the same as teeth. The acid within the vinegar acts the same on the egg shell as it does for food on the teeth! This shows kids how important it is to brush their teeth!!!!

Bedwetting

Don't worry, bedwetting is surprisingly common. Around one in eight children starting primary school today still wet the bed regularly at night. Fortunately there is hope, as bedwetting becomes less common as children get older. Around 5% of 10 year olds (that's one in twenty) and 2% of 12 to 14 year olds (one in fifty) still wet the bed.
